Henry Rollins, von 1981 – 1986 Sänger der kalifornischen Hardcore-Punk Band Black Flag, ist nicht nur als Sänger von Black Flag und seiner eigenen Band Rollins Band, bekannt. Seit vielen Jahren tourt Henry Rollins auch als Spoken-Word Artist durchs Land. Auch zahlreiche Bücher sind mittlerweile von ihm erschienen. Unter anderem berichtet Rollins in “Get In The Van” in Tagebuchform über seine Erfahrungen auf Tour mit Black Flag. Rollins ist vor allem auch durch seine Emotionalität und Hingabe bei Live-Konzerten, die im Falle von Black Flag durchaus als chaotisch beschrieben werden können, bekannt. Michael Azerrad schreibt in seinem Buch “Our Band Could Be Your Life” über Henry Rollins und Black Flag. “As the band plugged in and tuned up, Rollins would stalk the stage like a caged animal, dressed only in black athletic shorts, glowering and grinding his teeth (to get pumped up before a show, he’d squeeze a treasured number thirteen pool ball he’d taken from a club in San Antonio). Then the band would throw down the hammer, and the entire room would turn into a chaotic whifrlpool of human flesh, its chance collisions oblivious to the rhythm of the music.” Ein Kritiker beschrieb ein Konzert von Black Flag wie folgt: “Rollins still carried the show with his truly menacing persona. He spit out the lyrics, convulsing to the beat, grinding his hips blatantly. Such a gruesome and intimidating display of rock aggression and frustration was hardly endearing, but like a high-speed car crash, you couldn’t keep your eyes – or ears – off them.” “Get In The Van ist auch als Hörbuch (von Henry Rollins selbst gelesen) erschienen und daraus gibt es heute Ausschnitte zu hören. Mag die Musik von Black Flag nicht jedermanns Sache sein, so erhält man in Get In The Van zumindest einen Einblick in den Tour-Alltag und die Live-Atmosphäre von Black Flag, in die Atmosphäre der Hardcore-Szene rund um die Band und nicht zuletzt auch in die sicherliche interessante Persönlichkeit von Henry Rollins. “I believe that one defines oneself by reinvention.
