Yoga Sutra Study 3.11
As the habit of reaching toward ALL and EVERYTHING is replaced by that of reaching toward One, the mind bows fully to union.
This sutra continues the story of the previous two:
3.9-When silence knocks on the mind’s door, deep habits of standing broken in two are subdued. In moments of silence, we learn to bow fully to silence;
3.10- When we bow fully to silence, we are borne forth on deep habits of silence.
Patanjali tells us that brief tastes of mental clarity build a thirst for even more clear-seeing, until we give our minds over to silence. Having done this, we are borne forth towards union, and having tasted That, our thirst impels us on to the point where closely held but mistaken self-identities are released. It is a story of natural progression; taking the first steps, we follow a new path that begins to seem strangely familiar. Though at first we may feel that we are leaving behind all that we recognize as normal life, we in fact travel towards our most real selves.
