in regardst to our sutra study…. The eight rungs or limbs of Yogaa were introduced in sutra 2.29. The first two of these rungs or limbs are the Yamas and Niyamas, which were briefly described in the previous section and episodes (2.30-2.34). The individual Yamas and Niyamas are further described now in the following sutras.
And the reason for practicing the eight rungs or limbs of Yoga (2.29) is to develop attention as the tool for discriminative knowledge (2.28), which is the means to liberation or enlightenment. The Yamas and Niyamas build a foundation from which to do these subtle practices and from which to again also grow and heal from in unity & peace.
This Episode begins our exploration of the yama-s (the ethical underpinning of yoga).
We begin with ahimsā, which is most often translated as non-violence, but is so much more than the suppression of violence. Ahimsā is an inner attitude of reverence for all beings that simply doesn’t allow space for violence to arise.

This sutra is describing an amazing possibility. It describes a potential that’s inherent within each one of us. And while I believe in this potential, I can also admit that most of us haven’t reached it yet. Which leaves me asking: why? What’s stopping us from establishing ourselves in non-violence?
