On the occasion of the Donaufestival in May 2015, we met Jam Rostron / Planningtorock and talked about personal and musical development lines, collaborations and collectives, about patriarchal structures in the music business and Rostron’s handling, about favourite instruments and much more.

As musician, producer, performer and media artist Planningtorock plays with role-imaginings projected up from the outside. In a game of deception from masks and lighting installation, the fleeting images of identity and gender are liquefied during live performances. Musically, Planningtorock works with a small set of tools – violin, keyboard, saxophon, drum machine and heavily manipulated voice. Despite the sparse instrumentation and arrangement, Rostron’s songs evoke huge, cavernous spaces, disco utopias/dystopias are built and the political agenda in the texts on gender equality and sexual freedom are getting more explicit and urgent over the years. At the same time the thing got wit and groove.
